House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has backed down slightly [SLIGHTLY MY ASS] in her
fight with the CIA, saying that she really meant only to criticize the Bush
administration rather than career officials.

"My criticism of the manner in which the Bush Administration did not
appropriately inform Congress is separate from my respect for those in the
intelligence community who work to keep our country safe," Pelosi said in a
statement.

Pelosi caused an uproar Thursday when she accused the CIA of lying to her
about its use of waterboarding - which she considers torture - on terrorism
suspects.

Her comment came after President Obama's CIA director, Leon Panetta,
challenged her version of events, insisting that his agency told her the
truth in a controversial September 2002 briefing.

Panetta, who served with Pelosi in Congress as a fellow California Democrat,
had issued a memo to CIA staff Friday reiterating that agency records show
"CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah,
describing 'the enhanced techniques that had been employed,'" according to
CIA records.

"We are an agency of high integrity, professionalism and dedication,"
Panetta said in the memo. "Our task is to tell it like it is - even if that's
not what people always want to hear. Keep it up. Our national security
depends on it."

In her statement and answers Thursday, Pelosi had switched back and forth
between criticizing the CIA and Bush administration officials. Republicans
said she was unfairly criticizing non-political career officials doing the
briefing when she claimed "they mislead us all the time."

In what is so far the most difficult episode of her speakership, Pelosi is
under fire about what she knew of the abusive interrogation techniques
approved by the Bush administration and when she knew it.

At the same news conference where she accused the CIA of misleading her on
the topic, Pelosi acknowledged for the first time that she knew in 2003 that
terrorism suspects were waterboarded. She said she learned that from an aide
who sat in on a briefing in February 2003.

Republicans have called her a hypocrite for criticizing techniques as
"torture" when she tacitly agreed to the practices after the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks. One lawmaker - Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) - called on
Pelosi Friday to step down as Speaker.

At the same time, liberal groups could question why she didn't push back
harder against the Bush administration. Pelosi defended herself for not
speaking out at the time about information disclosed in a classified
briefing. Asked why she didn't co-sign a formal objection by Rep. Jane
Harman (D-Calif.), who attended the briefing with Pelosi aide Mike Sheehy,
Pelosi said any objection would have done little good.

"No letter could change the policy," she said on May 14 at a news
conference. "It was clear we had to change the leadership in Congress and in
the White House. That was my job, the Congress part."

Florida's Graham Backs Pelosi On CIA Briefings

"I'm not impressed with the credibility of the
CIA as it was being led in 2002. I think it had
become an agency that instead of following the
admonition to speak truth to power, it was trying
to speak what it thought power wanted to hear."

All Things Considered, May 15, 2009 · House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has accused the CIA of
misleading her in 2002 about its use of
waterboarding during the Bush administration.

Now her fellow Democrat, former Sen. Bob Graham of
Florida, is also disputing the CIA's version of
the briefings that he received at the time. Graham
was then chairman of the Senate Intelligence
Committee, while Pelosi was the top Democrat on
the House Intelligence Committee.

How Many Briefings?

Graham is known as a meticulous note-taker and has
maintained a daily log that fills hundreds of
spiral notebooks, which now reside at the
University of Florida Library of Florida History.

"Several weeks ago, when this issue started to
bubble up, I called the CIA and asked for the
dates in which I had been briefed," Graham tells
Robert Siegel. "They gave me four: two in April of
'02, two in September."

Graham says he consulted his logs "and determined
that on three of the four dates there was no
briefing held."

He adds: "On one date, Sept. 27, '02, there was a
briefing held and, according to my notes, it was
on the topic of detainee interrogation."

Graham says the CIA was initially reticent when he
told the agency what he had found in his notes.

"They said, 'We will check and call back,'" Graham
recalled. "When they finally did a few days later,
they indicated that I was correct. Their
information was in error. There was no briefing on
the first three of four dates."

Graham says the agency offered no explanation
regarding how it came up with the other dates.

'No Discussion Of Waterboarding'

The Sept. 27, 2002, briefing occurred about three
weeks after the briefing in which the CIA says it
told Pelosi about the use of waterboarding, a
technique also described as simulated drowning.
Graham, like Pelosi, says waterboarding was not
mentioned during his briefing.

"There was no discussion of waterboarding, other
excessive techniques or that they had applied
these against any particular detainees," he says.

Pelosi has charged that she was misled by the CIA.
Graham puts it another way.

"Nothing that I can recall being said surprised me
or has subsequently proven to be incorrect," he
says. "It was a matter of omission, not
commission."

Graham says he is not surprised at the CIA's
claims, noting that within a week of its Sept. 27
briefing, the agency presented to the Senate
Intelligence Committee its National Intelligence
Estimate of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq,
which was later shown to be flawed.

"I'm not impressed with the credibility of the CIA
as it was being led in 2002," Graham says. "I

following the admonition to speak truth to power,
it was trying to speak what it thought power

Panetta to CIA employees: We told Pelosi the truth

CIA Director Leon Panetta just sent a stern message to his employees
defending the agency against Speaker Nancy Pelosi's criticisms.

His message: We didn't mislead Congress; stay focused on your job.

Panetta's note was sent to reporters via the CIA press office. Here's the
key graph:

"Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress. That
is against our laws and our values. As the Agency indicated previously in
response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous records from
September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully on the
interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing "the enhanced techniques that had
been employed." Ultimately, it is up to Congress to evaluate all the
evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened."

In some ways, Panetta is doing what any executive would do: He's protecting
his people and trying to boost morale for an agency that's under fire. But
the political message is much stronger, as you have the a serious rift now
between the most powerful congressional Democrat and one of the top
officials in the Obama administration.

UPDATE: Pelosi's office has responded with a gentle statement supporting the
work of the intelligence community, saying she was criticizing the Bush
administration, not the bureaucrats at the CIA:

"We all share great respect for the dedicated men and women of the
intelligence community who are deeply committed to the safety and security
of the American people. My criticism of the manner in which the Bush
Administration did not appropriately inform Congress is separate from my
respect for those in the intelligence community who work to keep our country
safe. What is important now is to be united in our commitment to ensuring
the security of our country; that, and how Congress exercises its oversight
responsibilities, will continue to be my focus as we move forward."

The full Panetta memo is after the jump.

Message from the Director: Turning Down the Volume

There is a long tradition in Washington of making political hay out of our
business. It predates my service with this great institution, and it will be
around long after I'm gone. But the political debates about interrogation
reached a new decibel level yesterday when the CIA was accused of misleading
Congress.

Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress. That
is against our laws and our values. As the Agency indicated previously in
response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous records from
September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully on the
interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing "the enhanced techniques that had
been employed." Ultimately, it is up to Congress to evaluate all the
evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened.

My advice - indeed, my direction - to you is straightforward: ignore the
noise and stay focused on your mission. We have too much work to do to be
distracted from our job of protecting this country.

We are an Agency of high integrity, professionalism, and dedication. Our
task is to tell it like it is - even if that's not what people always want
to hear. Keep it up. Our national security depends on it.

Here's the
"Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress.
That is against our laws and our values. As the Agency indicated
previously in response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous
records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully
on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing "the enhanced techniques
that had been employed." Ultimately, it is up to Congress to evaluate all
the evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened."
In some ways, Panetta is doing what any executive would do: He's
protecting his people and trying to boost morale for an agency that's
under fire. But the political message is much stronger, as you have the a
serious rift now between the most powerful congressional Democrat and one
of the top officials in the Obama administration.
UPDATE: Pelosi's office has responded with a gentle statement supporting
the work of the intelligence community, saying she was criticizing the
"We all share great respect for the dedicated men and women of the
intelligence community who are deeply committed to the safety and
security of the American people. My criticism of the manner in which the
Bush Administration did not appropriately inform Congress is separate
from my respect for those in the intelligence community who work to keep
our country safe. What is important now is to be united in our commitment
to ensuring the security of our country; that, and how Congress exercises
its oversight responsibilities, will continue to be my focus as we move
forward."
The full Panetta memo is after the jump.
Message from the Director: Turning Down the Volume
There is a long tradition in Washington of making political hay out of
our business. It predates my service with this great institution, and it
will be around long after I'm gone. But the political debates about
interrogation reached a new decibel level yesterday when the CIA was
accused of misleading Congress.
Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress.
That is against our laws and our values. As the Agency indicated
previously in response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous
records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully
on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing "the enhanced techniques

the evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened.
My advice - indeed, my direction - to you is straightforward: ignore the
noise and stay focused on your mission. We have too much work to do to be
distracted from our job of protecting this country.
We are an Agency of high integrity, professionalism, and dedication. Our
task is to tell it like it is - even if that's not what people always
want to hear. Keep it up. Our national security depends on it.

Florida's Graham Backs Pelosi On CIA Briefings
"I'm not impressed with the credibility of the CIA as it was being
led in 2002. I think it had become an agency that instead of following
the admonition to speak truth to power, it was trying to speak what it
thought power wanted to hear."
All Things Considered, May 15, 2009 · House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has
accused the CIA of misleading her in 2002 about its use of waterboarding
during the Bush administration.
Now her fellow Democrat, former Sen. Bob Graham of Florida, is also
disputing the CIA's version of the briefings that he received at the
time. Graham was then chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee,
while Pelosi was the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
How Many Briefings?
Graham is known as a meticulous note-taker and has maintained a daily
log that fills hundreds of spiral notebooks, which now reside at the
University of Florida Library of Florida History.
"Several weeks ago, when this issue started to bubble up, I called the
CIA and asked for the dates in which I had been briefed," Graham tells
Robert Siegel. "They gave me four: two in April of '02, two in
September."
Graham says he consulted his logs "and determined that on three of the
four dates there was no briefing held."
He adds: "On one date, Sept. 27, '02, there was a briefing held and,
according to my notes, it was on the topic of detainee interrogation."
Graham says the CIA was initially reticent when he told the agency what
he had found in his notes.
"They said, 'We will check and call back,'" Graham recalled. "When they
finally did a few days later, they indicated that I was correct. Their
information was in error. There was no briefing on the first three of
four dates."
Graham says the agency offered no explanation regarding how it came up
with the other dates.
'No Discussion Of Waterboarding'
The Sept. 27, 2002, briefing occurred about three weeks after the
briefing in which the CIA says it told Pelosi about the use of
waterboarding, a technique also described as simulated drowning. Graham,
like Pelosi, says waterboarding was not mentioned during his briefing.
"There was no discussion of waterboarding, other excessive techniques or
that they had applied these against any particular detainees," he says.
Pelosi has charged that she was misled by the CIA. Graham puts it
another way.
"Nothing that I can recall being said surprised me or has subsequently
proven to be incorrect," he says. "It was a matter of omission, not
commission."
Graham says he is not surprised at the CIA's claims, noting that within
a week of its Sept. 27 briefing, the agency presented to the Senate
Intelligence Committee its National Intelligence Estimate of weapons of
mass destruction in Iraq, which was later shown to be flawed.
"I'm not impressed with the credibility of the CIA as it was being led
in 2002," Graham says. "I think it had become an agency that instead of
following the admonition to speak truth to power, it was trying to speak
what it thought power wanted to hear."

Thank you Princess Pelosi. You indeed are a breath of fresh air and a
friend of the Republican party......
ROFLMFAO...............
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/pelosi-tries-to-backpedal-on-cia-criticism-2009-05-16.html
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has backed down slightly [SLIGHTLY MY ASS]
in her fight with the CIA, saying that she really meant only to
criticize the Bush administration rather than career officials.
"My criticism of the manner in which the Bush Administration did not
appropriately inform Congress is separate from my respect for those in
the intelligence community who work to keep our country safe," Pelosi
said in a statement.
Pelosi caused an uproar Thursday when she accused the CIA of lying to
her about its use of waterboarding - which she considers torture - on
terrorism suspects.
Her comment came after President Obama's CIA director, Leon Panetta,
challenged her version of events, insisting that his agency told her
the truth in a controversial September 2002 briefing.
Panetta, who served with Pelosi in Congress as a fellow California
Democrat, had issued a memo to CIA staff Friday reiterating that agency
records show "CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of
Abu Zubaydah, describing 'the enhanced techniques that had been
employed,'" according to CIA records.
"We are an agency of high integrity, professionalism and dedication,"
Panetta said in the memo. "Our task is to tell it like it is - even if
that's not what people always want to hear. Keep it up. Our national
security depends on it."
In her statement and answers Thursday, Pelosi had switched back and
forth between criticizing the CIA and Bush administration officials.
Republicans said she was unfairly criticizing non-political career
officials doing the briefing when she claimed "they mislead us all the
time."
In what is so far the most difficult episode of her speakership, Pelosi
is under fire about what she knew of the abusive interrogation
techniques approved by the Bush administration and when she knew it.
At the same news conference where she accused the CIA of misleading her
on the topic, Pelosi acknowledged for the first time that she knew in
2003 that terrorism suspects were waterboarded. She said she learned
that from an aide who sat in on a briefing in February 2003.
At the same time, liberal groups could question why she didn't push
back harder against the Bush administration. Pelosi defended herself
for not speaking out at the time about information disclosed in a
classified briefing. Asked why she didn't co-sign a formal objection by
Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), who attended the briefing with Pelosi aide
Mike Sheehy, Pelosi said any objection would have done little good.
"No letter could change the policy," she said on May 14 at a news
conference. "It was clear we had to change the leadership in Congress
and in the White House. That was my job, the Congress part."

Here's the
"Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress.
What is important now is to be united in our commitment
to ensuring the security of our country; that, and how Congress exercises
its oversight responsibilities, will continue to be my focus as we move
forward."
As the Agency indicated
previously in response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous
records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully
on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing "the enhanced techniques
that had been employed." Ultimately, it is up to Congress to evaluate all
the evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened.

So truth isn't your strong point either? Bush ordered the torture, Patriot

What part of that do you need to be explained to you?
Lying does seem to be your ONLY point that is unless you can show where I
advocated the lying bitch princess pelosi divulge classified intel......

Pelosi was NOT speaker when Bush began torture. Hastert was.
What part of that do you need explained to you?

Panetta to CIA employees: We told Pelosi the truth
CIA Director Leon Panetta just sent a stern message to his employees
defending the agency against Speaker Nancy Pelosi's criticisms.
His message: We didn't mislead Congress; stay focused on your job.
Panetta's note was sent to reporters via the CIA press office. Here's
"Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress.
That is against our laws and our values. As the Agency indicated
previously in response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous
records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed
truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing "the
enhanced techniques that had been employed." Ultimately, it is up to
Congress to evaluate all the evidence and reach its own conclusions
about what happened."
In some ways, Panetta is doing what any executive would do: He's
protecting his people and trying to boost morale for an agency that's
under fire. But the political message is much stronger, as you have the
a serious rift now between the most powerful congressional Democrat and
one of the top officials in the Obama administration.
What is important now is to be united in our
commitment to ensuring the security of our country; that, and how
Congress exercises its oversight responsibilities, will continue to be
my focus as we move forward."
As the Agency indicated
previously in response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous
records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed
truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing "the
enhanced techniques that had been employed." Ultimately, it is up to
Congress to evaluate all the evidence and reach its own conclusions
about what happened.
My advice - indeed, my direction - to you is straightforward: ignore the
noise and stay focused on your mission. We have too much work to do to
be distracted from our job of protecting this country.

All Things Considered, May 15, 2009 · House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has
accused the CIA of misleading her in 2002 about its use of
waterboarding during the Bush administration.
Now her fellow Democrat, former Sen.
Graham, like Pelosi, says waterboarding was not mentioned during his
briefing.
"There was no discussion of waterboarding, other excessive techniques
or that they had applied these against any particular detainees," he
says.
"I think it had become an agency that instead of
following the admonition to speak truth to power, it was trying to
speak what it thought power wanted to hear."

Democrat, had issued a memo to CIA staff Friday reiterating that
agency records show "CIA officers briefed truthfully on the
interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing 'the enhanced techniques
that had been employed,'" according to CIA records.
Republicans said she was unfairly criticizing non-political career
officials doing the briefing when she claimed "they mislead us all the
time."
In what is so far the most difficult episode of her speakership,
Pelosi is under fire about what she knew of the abusive interrogation
techniques approved by the Bush administration and when she knew it.
At the same news conference where she accused the CIA of misleading
her on the topic, Pelosi acknowledged for the first time that she knew
in 2003 that terrorism suspects were waterboarded. She said she
learned that from an aide who sat in on a briefing in February 2003.
At the same time, liberal groups could question why she didn't push
back harder against the Bush administration. Pelosi defended herself
for not speaking out at the time about information disclosed in a
classified briefing. Asked why she didn't co-sign a formal objection
by Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), who attended the briefing with Pelosi
aide Mike Sheehy, Pelosi said any objection would have done little
good.
"No letter could change the policy," she said on May 14 at a news
conference. "It was clear we had to change the leadership in Congress
and in the White House. That was my job, the Congress part."

Graham says he consulted his logs "and determined
that on three of the four dates there was no
briefing held."
He adds: "On one date, Sept. 27, '02, there was a
briefing held and, according to my notes, it was
on the topic of detainee interrogation."
Graham says the CIA was initially reticent when he
told the agency what he had found in his notes.
"They said, 'We will check and call back,'" Graham
recalled. "When they finally did a few days later,
they indicated that I was correct. Their
information was in error. There was no briefing on
the first three of four dates."
Graham says the agency offered no explanation
regarding how it came up with the other dates.
'No Discussion Of Waterboarding'
The Sept. 27, 2002, briefing occurred about three
weeks after the briefing in which the CIA says it
told Pelosi about the use of waterboarding, a
technique also described as simulated drowning.
Graham, like Pelosi, says waterboarding was not
mentioned during his briefing.
"There was no discussion of waterboarding, other
excessive techniques or that they had applied
these against any particular detainees," he says.
Pelosi has charged that she was misled by the CIA.
Graham puts it another way.
"Nothing that I can recall being said surprised me
or has subsequently proven to be incorrect," he
says. "It was a matter of omission, not
commission."
Graham says he is not surprised at the CIA's
claims, noting that within a week of its Sept. 27
briefing, the agency presented to the Senate
Intelligence Committee its National Intelligence
Estimate of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq,
which was later shown to be flawed.
"I'm not impressed with the credibility of the CIA
as it was being led in 2002," Graham says. "I
think it had become an agency that instead of
following the admonition to speak truth to power,
it was trying to speak what it thought power
wanted to hear."

Mr Powell's team removed dozens of pages of alleged evidence about Iraq's
banned weapons and ties to terrorists from a draft of his speech, US News

of adequate sourcing to intelligence claims that he declared: "I'm not

Well of course, she's merely third on the short list to be president and
undeniably the most powerful (power-hungry too) member of congress. But you
danced around that little inconvenient fact that lying to congress is a
crime......

Prove that the CIA lied to the whore of the house about torture like the
whore of the has claims.
Let's have some hearings...under oath.
It's about time someone in the bush,jr/ Cheney administration stood up,
sworn to tell the truth, and testified.
Deal... I take it democrats (such as princess pelosi) who were complicit
under the terms outlined by the AG like the attorneys who drafted the
Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EIT) Memos will also be fair game, put
under oath and made to testify what they knew, when the knew it and what
their role was in these EIT?

Right?

Pelosi may have over stated the case but we all know the CIA lies on
occasion. At the very minimum they tell partial truths and leave out things
to reinforce their case. This is not anything new. They lied about "slam
dunk," yellow cake, WMD, Saddam-Al Qaeda connection, nuclear programs and
other things to bolster the Administrations case for war. The CIA is a part
of the executive branch was doing the bidding of the administration as they
had done in previous administrations. They did the same thing during the
Iran Contra basically lying about what went on. Congressional oversight is
a joke. Nobody can take notes, everything is classified and the
congressional participants can't even discuss the issues with their staff or
the Congress at large. The whole thing is rigged so the only records are
what the CIA claims. How convenient. It's also interesting that Kitt Bond
and Boehner Claim the CIA never lied to them? Either they are bull shit
artists, are very stupid and naive or they were not critical of the torture
programs. Naturally the CIA is going to cherry pick what they say depending
on who's listening.

The real question is what has the CIA done to protect the US in recent
years?. It seems their track record is piss poor over the past 30 years or
so. Their biggest failure was not predicting the collapse of the Soviet
Union. That was supposed to be their forte where they spent the most
resources and effort yet they missed it. Of course they also missed Bin
Laden and the whole Al Qaeda thing. One wonders what good they are? Maybe is
passed time to re-organize the agency into a leaner more efficient and
effective group with the interests of the US, it's people and it's
constitution in mind. We can do without Iran Contra, WMD, Yellow cake and
other bull shit to focus on accurate, legal, up to date, realistic and
truthful information. We've had enough crap out of that organization to last
a life time.

considers torture - on terrorism
: suspects.
: Her comment came after President Obama's CIA
director, Leon Panetta,
: challenged her version of events, insisting
that his agency told her the
: truth in a controversial September 2002
briefing.
: Panetta, who served with Pelosi in Congress
as a fellow California Democrat,
: had issued a memo to CIA staff Friday
reiterating that agency records show
: "CIA officers briefed truthfully on the
interrogation of Abu Zubaydah,
: describing 'the enhanced techniques that had
been employed,'" according to
: CIA records.
: "We are an agency of high integrity,
professionalism and dedication,"
: Panetta said in the memo. "Our task is to
tell it like it is - even if that's
: not what people always want to hear. Keep it
up. Our national security
: depends on it."
: In her statement and answers Thursday, Pelosi
had switched back and forth
: between criticizing the CIA and Bush
administration officials. Republicans
: said she was unfairly criticizing
non-political career officials doing the
: briefing when she claimed "they mislead us
all the time."
: In what is so far the most difficult episode
of her speakership, Pelosi is
: under fire about what she knew of the abusive
interrogation techniques
: approved by the Bush administration and when
she knew it.
: At the same news conference where she accused
the CIA of misleading her on
: the topic, Pelosi acknowledged for the first
time that she knew in 2003 that
: terrorism suspects were waterboarded. She
said she learned that from an aide
: who sat in on a briefing in February 2003.
: Republicans have called her a hypocrite for
criticizing techniques as
: "torture" when she tacitly agreed to the
practices after the Sept. 11
: terrorist attacks. One lawmaker - Rep. Steve
King (R-Iowa) - called on
: Pelosi Friday to step down as Speaker.
: At the same time, liberal groups could
question why she didn't push back
: harder against the Bush administration.
Pelosi defended herself for not
: speaking out at the time about information
disclosed in a classified
: briefing. Asked why she didn't co-sign a
formal objection by Rep. Jane
: Harman (D-Calif.), who attended the briefing
with Pelosi aide Mike Sheehy,
: Pelosi said any objection would have done
little good.
: "No letter could change the policy," she said
on May 14 at a news
: conference. "It was clear we had to change
the leadership in Congress and in
: the White House. That was my job, the
Congress part."

To hear the wingnuts say it (and really, it's hard to miss their
ululating at rock concert volumes), we don't have a problem with the
administration that demanded torture, or the legal counsel that
patched together a legal justification for torture, or the medical
personnel who stood by and watched the torture, or the punditocracy
who used a popular TV show to justify torture, or the rank-and-file
military and intelligence personnel who unquestioningly did the dirty
work of torture.

Nope. No problem at all.

None of these wingnuts showed any understanding that using torture
turns us into monsters until news broke that a certain congresswoman
may or may not have been briefed on these matters back in 2002 or
2003. THEN it became the most awful thing ever.

Strange are the ways of wingnuts.
