How many committee chairmanships did you say were offered to Democrats
when the Republicans were in the majority? It may surprise you, but
in American politics, those positions are normally given to members of
the majority party. All the Democratic leadership is doing is to
suggest that if Lieberman supports a Republican nominee for president,
he'll be classified as a Republican when it comes time to dole out
those positions.

Right now, the Democrats and Republicans are tied with Lieberman
being an independent and siding with Democrats on most issues. If
the Deomcrats gain a few more senators, Liberman won't have the
leverage he now does as he will no longer be a tie breaker.

No, the deficit is out of control because of Bush's war coupled with a
refusal to raise taxes to pay for it, plus other policies that are
simply bad for us. Just look a the yearly budget deficit since 1940:

The deficit went up seriously under Reagan, more under the first Bush,
and skyrocketed under the second Bush. Under Clinton, we actually got
it under control. It went up under Carter but started to go back down
before his term ended, but Carter's increase was minor blip compared
to what happened once Reagan took over.

Given the track record over the last 30 years, the last thing you
should do if you want fiscally responsible government is to vote for a
Republican for president. :-)
