OAKLAND A small homeless encampment along Interstate 880 near
Hegenberger Road burned Saturday morning, sending a large column of
smoke into the already smoke-hazy East Bay sky.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters responded at 10:12 a.m. at a grassy area near the
Hegenberger Road on-ramp to southbound I-880. The fire was out at
about 10:33 a.m..
The on-ramp was closed while the fire was doused. The blaze burned
debris and the belongings of the camps residents. Firefighters said
the cause of the fire is being investigated.
