Discussion:
What do you get when Republican senators filibuster unemployment benefits?

Answer: ex-Republicans!

The comments section of the Wall Street Journal's blog is full of
angry messages about the Republicans' refusal to authorize another
extension of unemployment benefits.

http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2010/06/24/faq-unemployment-benefits-extension/tab/comments/

Many of them are from readers who identify themselves as Republicans.
Here is a sampling, and there are lots more where these came from.

* Steve wrote:

I’ve paid over 40% tax on over 100k of salary per year for 15 years
without so much as wincing, thats over 600k in taxes in my lifetime so
far and I’ve never asked for anything from the government . Now that I
can’t find a job for the life of me, the republicans think that I am
living high on the hog with such lavish unemployment benefits and
would like to see it end before the economy has even recovered.

Thats fine, I’m not homeless yet, as I’m sure others will find
themselves, but why? $33B to extend the UI benefits till the end of
the year is a rounding error compared to the defense budget, a
fraction of the subsidies and tax breaks doled out to corporations.

Republicans can try and portray themselves as fiscal hawks all they
want, but there is a special place in hell for people like them

* Roy wrote:

After over 28 years as a Republican (since I was a high school senior)
I’ve changed my party affiliation to Independent. Even though I am an
educated professional, I’ve been unemployed for nearly a year and I
just exhausted my Tier 1 benefits. Now I’m learning that the
Republican are filibustering to squelch any further extension of
unemployment benefits. Despite the many philosophical differences I
have with the Democrat party, I will be voting Democrat this November.
Like Tim Bragg stated, these out-of-touch millionaire senators don’t
give a damn for the unemployed American people. All they care about is
the rich and Corporate America. Let’s hope that all of the Republicans
and blue-dog Democrats lose their seats this November. And Rush
Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and all of the other Republican
hacks can go to hell!

* formerrepub wrote:

I cant wait for things to come back on handout and I promise you they
certainly will. Having voted a straight republican ticket my whole
life I can assure you that will change. I also warn everyone to not
vote for tea party nutjobs because they are even further right than
the yahoo’s retards in Congress right now. Very ashamed of myself
because I had a hand in voting Voinovich in office. No more
republicans from me. Handout be man enough to show your face when us
unemployed take to the streets and throw you obese repubs from your
homes. It is coming my friend because I refuse to sleep under a bridge
in the hood.

So, how long do you think unemployment benefits should be available? One
year, five years, forever? Should the payout be based on previous
income, or should everybody receive a "living wage?"

Until rich people benevolently make jobs for us.

(Oh, uh, or until middle class people get more disposable income, and
start using it to increase the sales of local goods and services in
their neighborhoods.)

Everyone should have a safety net in the world's richest country so lives
aren't routinely destroyed by the capriciousness of bankers and major
corporations.

There's no reason people should have to depend on a class of ultra-
wealthy who got their money from the work of those people to survive.

Unemployment benefits should be available as long as there is one car,
one computer chip, or even one sneaker being imported into this
country. If the nation enjoys the advantages of cheap foreign
products, then the nation should assist those workers who are being
put out of work by cheap foreign products.

Unemployment benefits should be available as long as golden parachutes
are available to big business CEOs, as long as bonuses are available
to Wall Street gamblers, as long as big oil companies are granted
exclusive ownership to American oil, as long as tax breaks are
available to the rich, as long even one US dollar is invested in some
foreign enterprise. Unemployment benefits should be available as long
as even one American worker can't find a decent job.

But surveys suggest there are less illegal aliens in America than there
were in 2007, because there aren't any jobs.

And they sure as hell don't come to America for the good treatment they
can expect.

Answer: ex-Republicans!

"I got mine, screw you!"
no ray, i created my job out of nothing. if my business fails, i
don't qualify for dole payments like those who have been collecting
for over a year. two minimum wage jobs today, at 16 hours a day can
make a person more than 30 grand a year in my state. more than you
can get on unemployment. so my answer remains: get a job.

hmmm... oh, i get it now. i work my ass off, pay my taxes, create
employment so that i don't have to be a burden to someone else, but
now they have a right to intrude into what i have created, through the
use of federal dollars, because they're 12 months of not doing what
most do has expired...

Yup. You can work all you like, but the big gov't is going to take
your money and give it to arms manufacturers (the USA's only export),
plus oodles of corporate welfare & lobbyists.

It's the system!

Well, I'll just use your own ideology on you: Tough shit. Quit

Not very original. We refer to his gambit at the "Thurston Howell the
Third" routine. They are rich, important, self-made men who spend hours
unaccountably fucking around on Usenet, trying to impress people they
hate and who don't give a shit about them.

If you mock them, they either blow up and go away, or, even better, they
start building themselves up in an effort to impress. We have one who
has claimed at various times to own three yachts, an apartment bloc in
Florida, have a beautiful young lady-lawyer girlfriend who is either
black or Cherokee, have a false leg, a false eye, and 'chiseled
features'. That led me to ask if he lost the eye while he was getting
his features chiseled.

They all like to disparage anyone who isn't rich, and claim that the poor
have only themselves to blame for being poor.

Some of them just do it to be annoying. The rest are just mental.

If you mock them, they either blow up and go away, or, even better, they

They all like to disparage anyone who isn't rich, and claim that the poor
have only themselves to blame for being poor.
Some of them just do it to be annoying. The rest are just mental.

There are currently 5-6 unemployed people for every job opening.

There are currently 5-6 unemployed people for every job opening.
Getting a job is a lot more problematic than you are capable of
imagining.
Employed people create more jobs. Reality check not all jobs are
desirable. And many people are choosy as hell about what they will do,
I say let them get real hungry, and shoveling shit for food becomes
attractive.
desperate and frightened. Those types make the best laborers.
Actually what they don't want is ass holes that spend all their time
whining about how sorry American business men are.
So they move their factories overseas and tell their new workers to be
grateful for the $3 a day they get paid, and are reminded that that
achilles tendons are a privilege, not a right.

had him promise to keep spares, the parts were prone to fail. Now all
the parts I bought from that American company have been replaced with
Korean parts. Another American company ruined by lousy workers. But ass
holes like you are a minority, most Americans are good workers. That do
not like working with shit for brains like you.
Run along, little troll. Come back when you's all growed up and have a
little originality.

Give the customer what he wants he will not buy from others. GM auto
worker were buying Toyotas and Hondas. Electronic workers were buying
foreign made TVS. American workers were demanding protection. Sorry I
don't like it, but the lazy ass American that demanded Higher wages,
more benefits shorter work weeks, longer vacations drove their
employers to move offshore. Don't like it? Don't buy imported goods.

how nice.
There are currently 5-6 unemployed people for every job opening. Getting
a job is a lot more problematic than you are capable of imagining.
Employed people create more jobs. Reality check not all jobs are
desirable. And many people are choosy as hell about what they will do, I
say let them get real hungry, and shoveling shit for food becomes
attractive.
desperate and frightened. Those types make the best laborers.
Actually what they don't want is ass holes that spend all their time
whining about how sorry American business men are.
<LOL> How well Jamieson knows that...

Are you intentionally stupid? Or are you just a complete asshole?
When there are no jobs then it doesn't matter what jobs people are
willing to take.

Yeah, I know: You'd just as soon wait until you can pay somebody
$10/day to drag away the bodies of people who starved.

[--Silly Billy displays his solipsism--]
there's currently a driver shortage nationwide. a person can get a
cdl in 4 weeks and unemployment will pay for it. these people who
were cut loose have been on unemployment longer than those who are
currently collecting. time for them to look into something else and
make room for newer claims.

And there's room for the kids in the back of those huge big-rig cabs.

Oh, but there I go playing the "what about the children" card again -
silly me!

Reality check, many long term truck drivers, are looking for a Job
driving, the driver shortage has been taken care of. Best bet is in
medical service, feeding, bathing, passing out and collecting bed
pans. Etc. Short handed now and demand is likely to increase.

There's a reason they are short handed: pressed to the wall in the
world's least efficient medical system, hospitals have dismissed much of
their staffs, and the few remaining face an intolerable burden, resulting
in an extremely high rate of turnover.

Maybe you should pay more or stop demanding "experience".
