While Hal's posts often struggle to have interest and credibility
to those of us who don't share his strongly-expressed political views,
they are always sincere and very real. Hal holds some rather
iconoclastic and somewhat extreme views on a variety of topics. He
generally wishes to discuss these topics at rather greater length than
most folks do. Both in person, at least back when I knew him from the
SF and Berk go clubs, and online he is often disappointed by others'
lack of interest or stamina. He is driven to find ways to draw his
preferred topics into conversations on other subjects. At the go club
this often took the form of taking "polls" on whatever issues consume
him at a given moment, i.e. "Should any drug ever be outlawed or
legally regulated?". Online, it manifests through posts like the
original of this thread, creating a connection between the newsgroup
topic and his topic. Back in the day, he would hit singles newsgroups
with things like "Seeking young woman interested in long walks and
discussing topics of interest such as" followed by a 900 line political
essay.
When not absorbed in political causes, Hal is a pleasant and
charming conversationalist, as well as a willing and capable teacher to
weaker players.

These are the sort of images that the BBC also doesn't show in
such detail and those they do only for second or two, are not as
harrowing.
Yes we get lots of extended panoramic shots of the destroyed
buildings and have to 'imagine' the carnage.
Recall a longish time ago when a similar collapse caused by a
vehicle full of explosive dropped a concrete building on some 150
billeted American troops. There too the BBC only showed the building.
Then those men were soldiers not children.

questionable concrete; buildings with a distinct lack of strength
against lateral loading from any source. Look at the columns snapped
off from the flat slabs of the floors as the floors are moved
sideways and then go on down in one piece, unless they hit an
adjacent building, to make grisly.... /any word at this point is best
imagined/

Shear walls are not too often in evidence in these buildings;
especially where the ground floors are let as shops; evidence the
earthquake damage to Turkish shops with housing over. That was on the
Dardanelles side of that country a few years ago.
