Draining the Sea is the most ambitious and provocative book to date
from acclaimed author Micheline Aharonian Marcom. The story unfurls
inside the mind of a man who spends his nights driving the streets of
Los Angeles, racked by memories and visions of the Guatemalan civil
war, and, in particular, of a beautiful young Mayan woman who died
violently in it. He was in love with her, but, it seems, may have
played a role in her death. He also is very aware of the United
States' complicity in the horrors of that conflict, further twisting
his anguish. And in his mind, her fate resonates back to his own
childhood as the grandson of survivors of the Armenian Genocide.
Micheline Aharonian Marcom, herself descended from Armenian Genocide
survivors, has always been haunted by the long-term effects of
atrocity. In Three Apples Fell from Heaven, she told the tale of the
forcible deportation and massacre of Armenians with unsparing
directness. In The Daydreaming Boy, she imagined a man living in
Beirut who is forced to face the emotional aftermath of his brutal
boyhood as an orphan of the genocide. Now, in this darkly lyrical
novel, Marcom offers a powerful testament about the far-reaching

Ms.Marcom's reading is scheduled to begin about
an hour and a half from the moment of this writing.
An important part of her story concerns the
massive repression in Guatemala in 1980's carried out by
the puppets of Reagan-Bush aka the Genociderals. I expect
there'll be a Q & A and also that the author might be interested
in putting the suffering of the Mayans and other peoples of Central
America in an up-to-date global context. Therefore, I'll pop off with
the round figure that since 1990 WAR aka the WAshington Regime aka the
USGov has murdered in Iraq and in Afghanistan about 25 X the number of
its victims in all five stricken countries of Central America during
the 'Eighties.
My winging it calculation runs as follows: Estimated death toll for
Guatemala = 250,000; for El Salvador 80,000; for Nicaragua
40,000; for Panama 5,000; for Honduras 2,000. Total for
Central America = ~380,000 murdered by USGov agents, both Federal and
local, mainly during the decade in question although the Guatemalan
total may include earlier fatalities.
Whereas, Dr.Gideon Polya has estimated ~6.2 million excess deaths in
Afghanistan due to the US invasion. In response to my question, former
Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Hans-Christoff Graff
von Sponeck estimated 2,000,000 civilians slain by the USGov in Iraq
in its continuous aggression against that country from 1990 to the end
of March 2006. It remains to add the killings for the last two years
there. We note again that Mr. von Sponeck also affirmed that we law-
enforcing people of Earth should unite to arrest and to prosecute the
criminals guilty of this
prolonged atrocity.
My conclusion from this data = That we artists and intellectuals
of Earth have the duty to organize the masses of our Seven Billion
utterly to defeat the tyranny of DiCTATA aka the District of Columbia
Tel Aviv Terrorist Axis. Further, we living in the USA and
particularly the OSA aka Old Stock Americans whose ancestors were here
already at the time of our Civil War have the particular
responsibility to disarm the Pentagon, which has long threatened our
entire human race with anihilation. This strategic POV has some
current operational relation to preferring Ralph Nader among
the official candidates for the Presidency but also to favoring
Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton when and wherever that choice is
forced. The hour beeps.
