SALINAS, Calif. —Salinas police are investigating a horrific
double homicide that left two kids dead and a third child
fighting for her life in a hospital.

The bodies of two children, ages 3 and 5, were found in a
storage locker in Redding, Calif.

A severely abused 9-year-old girl was found at home and is
undergoing surgery for "numerous injuries," Plumas County
Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Peay said.

Tami Joy Huntsman, 39, and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on
charges of felony child abuse, torture, and mayhem.

Gonzalo Curiel will be tried as an adult, prosecutors said
Tuesday.

Detectives have spent the past two days combing through a
Salinas apartment on Fremont Street where Huntsman and several
children lived. She is an extended relative of the two homicide
victims.

Huntsman, Curiel, and the young children recently moved from
Salinas to Quincy, Calif.

The investigation began when Plumas County Child Protective
Services alerted the sheriff about an abused 9-year-old girl who
was found living at 2110 East Main Street in Qunicy, Peay said.

"Due to the circumstances surrounding the incident, further
investigation was required for possible additional victims. This
led to the discovery of two deceased (kids) inside a storage
unit in the city of Redding," Peay said.

The identities of the three children, who were siblings, were
not released. Autopsies are pending.

The Plumas County Sheriff's Office, Redding Police Department,
and Salinas Police Department are still investigating the
circumstances surrounding the children's death.

The Redding Police Department issued the following press release:

"On December 11, 2015 Tami Joy Huntsman and Gonzalo Curiel were
taken into custody by the Plumas County Sheriff's Office. They
were booked into the Plumas County Jail on charges of: Felony
child abuse, torture and mayhem. The victim's name is being
withheld at this time. Further investigation ultimately led to
the discovery of two deceased juveniles inside of a storage unit
in the city of Redding. The two juveniles have not been
identified at this time. This case is being investigated as a
homicide with an autopsy pending. Huntsman and Curiel are recent
residents of the Salinas area. The Redding Police Department is
working in conjunction with the Salinas Police Department and
the Plumas County Sheriff's Office following up on potential
leads."

Another tragedy highlighting the fact that the problem isn't guns, it's
people with no disregard for the lives of others. Somehow, segments of
society are raising psychopaths and sociopaths. That, not guns, is the
problem that needs to be addressed.
